Touchstone construction and occupancy class codes

The construction and occupancy class codes that you assign to each exposure have an impact on Touchstone analysis results. It is important to understand the two categories of codes, the construction and occupancy classes that Touchstone supports.

You must also understand which construction and occupancy class codes are valid for the countries or regions in which your exposures are located.

Construction class codes

Construction classes describe the dominant structural characteristics of an exposure. A unique three- or four-digit code identifies each construction class. Touchstone defines and categorizes construction classes in either of the following ways:

  • By the predominant structural material of an exposure, such as wood, masonry, concrete, or steel

  • By the type of structure, such as bridges, equipment, mobile homes, or storage tanks

For a description of each construction class and a list of the construction class codes that are valid for each country/region that Touchstone supports, refer to the " Construction class codes" topic.

Occupancy class codes

Occupancy classes describe the dominant function or use of an exposure, such as residential, commercial, industrial, or transportation. A unique three- or four-digit code identifies each occupancy class.

For a description of each occupancy class and a list of the occupancy class codes that are valid for each country/region that Touchstone supports, refer to the " Occupancy Class Codes" topic.

Construction/occupancy class code combinations

Each model/peril supports a specific set of construction and occupancy class code combinations per country/region. For an overview of how Touchstone can handle invalid construction or occupancy class codes during loss analysis, see the "Behavior for invalid construction / occupancy class code combinations" topic. Contact your representative for additional information about valid construction and occupancy class combinations (by region and peril). For information about how Touchstone handles unknown construction and occupancy class code combinations, see the "Unknown construction / occupancy combinations" topic.

Note:

Touchstone also supports non-Touchstone construction and occupancy class codes, although we always recommend translating non-Touchstone codes to Touchstone codes wherever possible before importing your data. For more information, see the topics about non-Touchstone codes in the Help provided with your Touchstone Client.
